A dynamic and engaging Professional Development Workshop on “Sustainability in the Classroom” was conducted on 5th May 2026 at Oakridge International School, bringing together 110 passionate teachers for a meaningful morning of learning, reflection, and collaboration.
Reimagining Sustainability in Early Education

The workshop began by redefining sustainability—not just as an environmental concept, but as a way of thinking, living, and learning. Educators explored how sustainability in early childhood classrooms can be nurtured through simple daily habits, routines, and meaningful experiences. The discussion emphasized helping young learners develop respect for themselves, others, and the Earth from an early age.
Drawing inspiration from Organo Et School’s Saptapatha philosophy, the session introduced seven pillars of sustainable living: Earth, Water, Air, Food, Energy, Shelter, and People. These pillars provided a strong foundation for understanding sustainability as a holistic and integrated approach.
From Concept to Classroom Practice

The workshop then moved into practical implementation, where teachers explored simple yet impactful ways to bring sustainability into their everyday classroom practices. From encouraging water conservation and energy-saving habits to managing classroom waste responsibly, the focus was on actionable strategies that educators could immediately adopt.
Participants actively collaborated to design eco-friendly classroom practices, reinforcing the idea that sustainability is best taught through consistent actions rather than isolated lessons.
Integrating Sustainability Across the Curriculum
A key highlight of the session was demonstrating how sustainability can be seamlessly woven into existing curriculum areas. Teachers explored connections across subjects—using stories and conversations in language development, integrating counting and measuring in numeracy, and engaging children with nature through environmental studies.
Creative expression through art using recycled materials and fostering empathy through social-emotional learning further showcased how sustainability can naturally become a part of everyday learning experiences without adding to the curriculum load.
Building a Culture of Sustainability

The final segment focused on creating a larger school culture rooted in sustainability. Teachers reflected on their role as models of sustainable behavior and discussed ways to create nature-connected learning environments. The importance of encouraging child-led initiatives and engaging families in reinforcing sustainable habits at home was also emphasized.
The session concluded with a reflective activity, where teachers identified practical and achievable changes they could implement in their classrooms, ensuring that the learning translates into meaningful action.
Towards a Sustainable Future
The workshop successfully inspired educators to view sustainability not as an additional subject, but as a way of life that can be embedded into every aspect of teaching and learning. By equipping teachers with practical tools and perspectives, the session took a significant step towards nurturing environmentally conscious and responsible future citizens.
