On 23rd August, Organo Et School brought families together at Organo Bakaram for an immersive Paddy Plantation Workshop, offering participants an opportunity to step into the fields and experience the journey of rice—from grain to crop.
With 8 families participating, the session was designed to help children and adults understand rice cultivation not just through conversation, but by getting their hands into the soil and experiencing the process themselves.
The session began with an engaging activity for the young participants. Ms. Kalyani distributed activity sheets featuring a crossword and interesting facts about rice. The activity encouraged children to think, discover and learn about one of the most important food crops in our everyday lives.
Once everyone assembled at the venue, Kalyani introduced the participants to the process of rice cultivation. She spoke about the different types of rice, including small-grain, medium-grain and long-grain varieties. Participants also got an opportunity to see what harvested paddy grain looks like and understand the transformation that takes place as paddy is processed into the rice that reaches our kitchens.
This simple connection between the field and the food on our plates helped bring a familiar staple to life in an entirely new way.
The real excitement began when everyone rolled up their sleeves and stepped into the paddy fields.
The plantation patches had been previously ploughed and levelled, ready for the participants to experience the traditional process of transplanting paddy.
The Organo farming team—Ms. Prabha Dhamodaran and Ms. Lakshmi Buttula, along with Narendra, Uday, Manoj and Babu—welcomed the families and guided them through the plantation process.
With their feet in the field and seedlings in their hands, participants learned how young paddy seedlings are carefully transplanted into the prepared soil. What began as an instructional session soon became a joyful, hands-on experience, with children and adults alike thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to work together in the field.
A paddy plantation experience offers a lesson that is easy to overlook in everyday life: rice does not begin in a packet or a bowl—it begins in the soil.
By experiencing the plantation process themselves, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the time, effort and knowledge involved in growing one of India's staple foods.
For children especially, stepping into the paddy field transformed an everyday food item into a story they could see, touch and experience.
The workshop concluded with a special moment of appreciation for the young participants. Each child was felicitated with a certificate and a goodie bag celebrating the diversity of rice.
The goodie bag featured five varieties of rice such as red rice, black rice, navara rice, HMT rice and rajamudy rice
Each variety offered a reminder that rice is not simply one grain, but a diverse world of varieties, traditions and food cultures.
The Paddy Plantation Workshop at Organo Bakaram was more than a farming activity. It brought families closer to the food system, farming practices and the land that sustains us.
At Organo Et School, we believe that meaningful learning often begins when we move beyond simply talking about something and create opportunities to experience it firsthand.
For the families who participated, the day ended with muddy feet, new knowledge, certificates, a bag full of rice varieties and, most importantly, a deeper connection to the journey of the humble grain that finds its way to our plates every day.
Because sometimes, understanding where our food comes from begins with putting our feet in the field.
