Recap OES Polyhouse farming Session 5

The fifth session of the polyhouse farming program was held on 19th June 2022 at Organo Et School Children’s farm campus, Kesaram. Farm learners successfully gained knowledge on Integrated pest management and irrigation methods. Farm coach Venkatesh explained that Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable, science-based, decision-making process that combines biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools to identify, manage and reduce risk from pests and pest management tools and strategies in a way that minimizes overall economic, health and environmental risks. He explained pest is an organism (microbes, plants, or animals) that poses economic, health, aesthetic, or environmental risk. He has demonstrated the use of biological products which control pests. Some of them are Neem Oil solution, garlic and chilly solution, onion peels, etc.

Farm coach Shilpa explained the impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on the ecosystem. She described in detail alternative agriculture and its importance to the current situation. After the method demonstration, learners went to the respective patches and identified the pests and diseases. Some of them clarified their doubts. After Integrated pest management, farm coach Venkatesh explained irrigation methods and technologies for water conservation. All the learners bid goodbye to each other and their farm coaches. Looking forward to the next meeting scheduled for 26th June 2022, which will cover soil aeration.
