On 11th September, 47 enthusiastic students from Grades 1 to 4, accompanied by 6 teachers from Pallavi International School,Gandipet set out on a field trip to Organo Antharam—where the classroom extended into the farm, the fields and the natural world.
For these young learners, the visit was an opportunity to move beyond books and discover how food is grown, how water moves through a farm, and how people and nature work together.
The students began their exploration at the netted house, observing how plants are nurtured and cared for. They then made their way to the farm, where they got their hands into the soil and experienced seed sowing themselves.
As they walked through the fields, they observed different vegetables growing on the farm and discovered that growing food involves patience, care and many small steps. They also explored drip irrigation, seeing how water can be delivered to plants in a controlled and efficient way.
One of the most engaging parts of the visit was the opportunity to interact with the farmers. The children eagerly asked questions about their daily work, the crops they grow, and the different practices involved in caring for a farm.
Their questions turned the interaction into a meaningful exchange, giving them a glimpse into the knowledge and effort that goes into producing the food we see on our plates every day.
The exploration continued with a closer look at the farm’s water systems. The students observed aquatic plants and animals and discovered that water bodies can support a variety of living organisms from fishes to dragonflies.
For the young learners, this was an opportunity to notice how different forms of life exist together and how water plays an important role in sustaining an ecosystem.
Understanding the Farm-Animal Connection
The visit to the Goshala was another memorable experience for the young explorers. The children were excited to see the cows up close and learn more about the animals that are part of the farm ecosystem. They gently fed the cows, observing their behaviour and discovering how animals are cared for on the farm. For many of the students, this was a joyful hands-on experience that helped them build a closer connection with animals and understand that a farm is home not just to crops, but to many different forms of life. The simple act of feeding the cows became an opportunity to talk about care, responsibility and the interconnectedness of people, animals and nature.
The students also got an opportunity to see solar panels and learn how sunlight can be converted into usable energy. Seeing the panels installed helped them connect the idea of solar energy from their classroom lessons to its practical application. Their curiosity led to questions about how the panels capture sunlight, where the energy goes. It was a simple yet meaningful way for the children to understand that the sun is not just a source of light and warmth—it can also be a valuable source of clean, renewable energy.
The day concluded with one of the most exciting activities—the Nature Hunt. With curious eyes and an eagerness to explore, the students looked closely at their surroundings, turning the natural landscape into an outdoor treasure hunt.
From seeds and vegetables to water, plants, animals and farmers, the children encountered many different aspects of farm life during their visit.
The field trip reminded us that for young children, sometimes the most meaningful lessons begin with simply stepping outside, getting their hands dirty, asking questions and looking a little closer at the world around them.
