This summer I interned at Organo Eco Habitats , where I conducted research, formulation, and practical testing on bio-enzyme cleaners as non-toxic, eco-friendly alternatives to conventional household chemicals. Bio-enzyme cleaners use living microorganisms and the targeted enzymes they secrete such as lipases , proteases etc, to break down organic waste into biodegradable products like carbon dioxide and water.
I conducted a simple fermentation process using organic kitchen waste (1 part jaggery, 3 parts citrus peels, and 10 parts water). Natural microbial activity activates yeast and beneficial bacteria, lowering the pH to create a naturally acidic and effective solution.
To evaluate real-world performance, I tested my bio-enzyme solution against conventional chemical cleaners like Lysol during floor mopping and vessel cleaning at the Organo building. The testing demonstrated that the bio-enzyme cleaner performed just as effectively as traditional chemicals and required less physical effort, while offering significant user-safety advantages—it was gentler on hands, had a much less pungent smell and was free from harsh chemicals. Beyond household use, the cleaner offers sustainable applications for pond and lake cleaning, sludge reduction, and nutrient balance.
This experience reinforced how low-cost, ecofriendly solutions can deliver high results while reducing domestic chemical pollution. This was an enlightening journey and I give a huge thank you to the team at Organo for their guidance and support throughout this project!
