When the Classroom Has No Walls
On 3rd September, 22 students from Grade 7 of ZPHS Aloor stepped into Organo Antharam for a field trip that began with one big question: How does solar energy actually work when it is put to use on a larger scale?
What began as a lesson on renewable energy soon turned into a much broader exploration of farming, water, biodiversity, animals and sustainable living. The students quickly discovered that at Organo Antharam, every corner had something new to observe and every experience seemed to lead to another question.
The students explored the use of solar energy and gained an understanding of how renewable energy can be harnessed beyond the scale they usually encounter in the classroom. But their curiosity did not stop there.
Their journey took them through the netted house and nursery, where they observed how plants are nurtured and protected. This led them to explore another important resource—water.
At the rainwater harvesting system, they discovered how rainwater can be collected and conserved, helping them connect the importance of water management with everyday life.
As they moved through the farm, the students also observed the diverse flora and fauna, beginning to understand that a farm is not simply a place where food is grown, but a living ecosystem where different elements are interconnected.
A visit to the Goshala brought a different kind of learning experience. The students had the opportunity to feed the cows while understanding how animals can form an important part of a sustainable farm ecosystem.
Their curiosity continued at the biogas plant, where they explored how organic waste can be converted into energy. This offered a practical example of how something that might otherwise be considered waste can become a useful resource.
One of the fascinating stops for the students was the hydroponic farming system. Seeing plants being grown using a method different from conventional soil-based farming encouraged them to think about the many possibilities of growing food and how technology can complement agriculture.
The farm also introduced the students to simple, nature-friendly approaches to crop management. They explored drip irrigation and observed how water can be delivered directly to plants, helping farmers use water thoughtfully.
They also observed sticky traps used for monitoring and managing pests and learned about the role of marigold plants as part of an integrated approach to pest management. These experiences helped students understand that natural farming does not depend on a single solution. Instead, it brings together several thoughtful practices that work alongside nature.
Armed with notebooks, observations and plenty of questions, the students documented their learnings throughout the visit. What they encountered at Organo Antharam allowed them to connect concepts from science and environmental studies with things they could actually see, touch and experience.
For an educator, perhaps that is the real value of a field trip: not simply giving children answers, but giving them something worth asking questions about.
At Organo Antharam, the students didn't just learn about solar energy, farming or sustainability—they spent the day discovering how these ideas come together in a living ecosystem.
