Curiosity took root at Rurban Loft on 4th April as children embarked on an exciting hands-on learning journey to uncover the secrets hidden beneath their feet. Through observation, exploration, and experimentation, participants discovered that soil is much more than just dirt—it is a living resource that supports life on Earth.
The session began with children exploring different types of soil and examining their unique characteristics, including texture, color, and composition. To investigate further, they conducted a Mason Jar Soil Test, a simple yet fascinating scientific activity that allowed them to observe how soil separates into layers of sand, silt, clay, and pebbles when mixed with water. As the layers settled, children eagerly recorded their observations and analyzed the composition of each soil sample.
Using worksheets, they documented their findings, compared results, and reflected on how soil quality influences plant growth. This hands-on experience encouraged critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
The learning journey then blossomed into a creative exploration of wildflower styling. Children discovered how wildflowers can be thoughtfully arranged to create beautiful, nature-inspired displays.
They experimented with different shapes, colors, and textures while learning about the role of flowers in supporting pollinators and biodiversity.
By combining science with creativity, the session offered a rich and engaging learning experience. Children left with colorful creations, and a newfound understanding of the vital connection between healthy soil, thriving ecosystems, and the beauty that nature provides.
