On 4th April 2026, a dynamic and engaging teacher training workshop on “Sustainability in Classrooms” brought together Early Years to Grade 2 educators.  We had around 50 teachers and Principals from five branches—Kondapur, V V Nagar, Bowrampet, National Public School, and West Maredpally from the Gitanjali International Group of Schools participating in the program.

This training initiative was thoughtfully designed to equip educators with practical strategies to strengthen classroom practices, foster student collaboration, and introduce meaningful approaches to sustainability in early years education.

Building Sustainability from the Early Years

The workshop centered on a powerful idea: sustainability in early childhood begins with simple daily habits and responsible choices. Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone subject, the sessions demonstrated how it can be seamlessly integrated into everyday classroom experiences.

Teachers explored how young learners can develop environmental awareness through observation, storytelling, hands-on activities, and daily routines that nurture responsibility and care for the environment.

Learning Through Experience: The STEL Approach

A key highlight of the workshop was the introduction to the Sustainability Through Experiential Learning (STEL)approach. Rooted in the philosophy of “learning by doing,” this approach encourages children to build meaningful connections with nature and their surroundings.

Educators were also introduced to the 3Es framework: Environment, Enjoyment and Experience.

Integrating Sustainability Across Subjects

The workshop demonstrated that sustainability does not require additional time or effort, but rather a shift in perspective. Teachers explored practical ways to integrate sustainability across subjects such as Language, Mathematics, EVS, and Art.

Through this approach, sustainability becomes a natural and meaningful part of the learning process rather than an added component.

Hands-on Learning and Classroom Practices

The training was highly interactive, offering teachers opportunities to engage in practical activities that can be easily adapted for their classrooms. These experiences helped educators understand how sustainability concepts can be made tangible, engaging, and age-appropriate for young learners.

Reflection and Commitment

The session concluded with a reflective exercise, where participants identified:

  • One habit they would stop
  • One habit they would start
  • One system they would introduce in their classroom

This action-oriented reflection ensured that the learning translates into meaningful and lasting change.

Teachers’ Reflections on Their Learning:

“ I can teach the students about nature. I will introduce new things about natural resources” -A Maneesha , Teacher

“ Workshop helped me to understand that sustainability can be taught in fun, simple ways” . - Sravathi, Teacher

“I am not just a teacher, I am a habit builder “- Geeja Sateesh, Teacher

“Sustainability is not a topic, it’s an everyday action” - Sahikala, Teacher

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

The workshop marked an important step in empowering educators to nurture environmentally conscious and responsible learners from an early age. By embedding sustainability into everyday classroom practices, teachers play a vital role in shaping a generation that is not only aware but also committed to caring for the planet.

We invite educators and schools to take this journey forward—by integrating small, meaningful sustainability practices into everyday teaching and learning. Start with simple habits, encourage curiosity about nature, and create classroom environments that model responsible choices.

Let us work together to move from teaching sustainability to living sustainability, and inspire young learners to become thoughtful stewards of the world around them.
