On the 11th of August, 29 students at Zilla Parishad High School, Kowkuntla, spent their morning doing something a little different from their usual textbook lessons — they built their own solar circuits.
The solar energy workshop, led by Ms. Kalyani S Organo Et School, began with a simple, everyday question for the students:

The session began with something students see and use every day — the fans, lights and electrical fittings in their own classroom.
Instead of starting with technical terms, we began with a simple question:
“Where does the electricity that powers our classroom actually come from?”
This sparked curiosity as students traced the journey of electricity — from where it is generated to how it travels and finally reaches their classroom. By connecting the concept to things they use every day, students began to see electricity not just as something that comes from a switch, but as a resource with a fascinating journey behind it.
From there, the discussion moved toward renewable sources, with a particular focus on solar power. Ms. Kalyani walked the students through how sunlight can be captured and converted into usable electricity, explaining the role of solar panels in a way that connected directly to things the students already recognized around their village and town — rooftop panels, streetlights, and water pumps running on solar power.
Learning by Doing

To reinforce what they had learned, students were given a short solar-themed quiz covering terms like "renewable," "photovoltaic," and "clean energy" — a light, engaging way to check how much had stuck from the discussion.

But the real energy in the room came during the hands-on activity . Once each group had assembled their solar kits, spent the last half hour patiently untangling wires and second-guessing connections were suddenly cheering, comparing whose bulb glowed brighter or whose motor fan spun faster. There was a real sense of pride in the room — not just in getting the science right, but in having built something that worked with their own hands.
They carried them out into the sunlight to test their work — and the moment their circuits sprang to life, powered entirely by sunlight, the excitement was impossible to miss.
Small Steps Toward Cleaner Energy

The workshop at Kowkuntla school was never meant to turn every student into a future engineer or scientist. Its goal was far simpler, and perhaps more important: to show these young learners that clean energy isn't some distant, complicated idea reserved for labs and textbooks — it's something they can understand, question, and even build with their own two hands. In a region where sunlight is abundant and its potential often overlooked, that realization matters.
For thirty students in Kowkuntla, a single morning spent wiring circuits and chasing sunlight may well mark the beginning of something bigger — a lasting curiosity about how the world around them is powered, and perhaps, one day, a role in powering it differently themselves.
